Rely On Digital Scales When Accuracy Hangs In The Balance

Posted in Uncategorized on February 27th, 2011 by Andrew – Be the first to comment

A Digital scale or analytical balance can be employed across a broad spectrum of businesses ranging from research laboratories to heavy-duty industrial applications.  Uses for digital scales and balances go far beyond determining accurate weights –  whether in milligrams or tons.  Among other tasks they are used for counting, for recipe weighing, for tolerance weighing, totalizing, dispensing and percentage determination.

An analytical balance is perfect for tolerance weighing, for example, which allows users to set limits when performing repetitive functions such as filling a container with a specified weight of product.  When products being weighed fall within set tolerances, the scale signals an OK.  Otherwise the scale emits a visual or audio signal.  The signal makes it easier for the operator to quickly fill multiple containers.

A tremendous range of digital scales and analytical balances are available to satisfy most every conceivable need, as exemplified by the Kern family offered by Tovatech.  In accordance with GLP, GMP and various regulations most of these weighing and counting instruments are officially verified for accuracy before shipment.  Stringent rules also apply to ongoing calibration in accordance with ISO 9000 requirement.

But as accurate as a scale or balance may be when shipped, it is incumbent on users to operate and maintain these instruments to high standards in order to survive compliance audits that may be called by agencies such as the FDA. Even when health issues are not impacted, an inaccurate scale could mean that customers are not getting what they pay for, or the manufacturer is packaging more than the label indicates.

Scale Tips

It doesn’t take much to throw off a scale’s accuracy, especially when weighing in milligrams.  When placing product on the weighing pan personnel must allow time for the scale to stabilize.  Placing the product in the center of the weighing pan is also a good practice as incorrect readings may result otherwise from what is termed an eccentric or corner loading error. Stabilization time is shortened and weighing accuracy is improved when the scale weighing cell is formed of a single block of material such as used in the Kern ABT analytical balance.

Electrostatic discharge can also throw off measurements when weighing non-conductive materials.  A discharge ionizer is the remedy.

External vibrations or oscillations can also cause inaccurate readings.  These may be so slight as to go unnoticed by personnel but nonetheless can have an impact on the performance of a digital balance. Placing the scale or balance on a dampening pad may offer some protection.

Where the scale or balance is being used can help determine purchase specifications.  For example, scales used in factory settings may be subject to dirt and moisture.  In such instances the equipment should have an IP (ingress protection) rating against dust and moisture.  The latter is particularly important if the scale is used in a wet area or subject to frequent hose-downs to remove contaminants.   An IP rating is usually given as a two-digit number with the first (generally 0 to 6) relating to solid objects including dust and the second (generally 0 to 8) against liquids. The higher numbers the greater the protection.

Most critical to the accuracy of a digital balance, laboratory or industrial scale is periodic calibration with the frequency and process spelled out in the company’s operation manual.  This is a subject unto itself.

“Good Balance Scale”
By Ernest E. Marks
This balance scale is easy to setup and operate. It works just like in the doctor’s office, and the height measurement is perfect as well. I like the repeatability of the scale versus my bathroom scale. I can weigh even light things, even less than a pound by first balancing my own weight then adding the item I want to weigh. The only issue I had was that I had to find an area of the house where I don’t have carpet. The scale comes with extra counter weights for heavy weights, but I don’t expect to use them. The maximum weight measurement without the additional counter weights is 350 pounds. It never needs batteries and probably will never wear out. Zero adjustment is never needed, but it is very easy to do.

“Love it-but description was misleading”
By Geocacher (Pennsylvania)
The box came and it was quite large, about 6 lb long! I opened it and there were 2 main pieces and a little bag with a wrench (looks like a bracket) and 4 nuts. The descriptions said it came with casters but there were none in the box. I took the pieces upstairs one at a time because total it weighs about 40 lbs. It went together easily except putting on the nuts was a little difficult. I have fumble fingers trying to get the nut lined up with the threads of the screw so I wouldn’t strip it. Just four nuts and you pull the little metal hook on the inside of the pillar and attach it to a hole on the base and that was it. It said to have a hard level floor to put it on and our floor slopes a bit (old house) so I shimmed a piece of plywood level and set it on that. It is super accurate. I weighed myself 3 times in a row and got the same weight. I’m really happy with the scale and it isn’t that heavy that I needed the casters anyway since I have a permanent place for it. I purchased mine from the Wholesale Point, Inc (through Amazon.com) and the second business day it was shipped and it arrived 2 days later. We are 3 states away. I thought it would be a few weeks to get the scale but I got it within a week of ordering. I’m very happy!

“Wellness Program Approves”
By J. Scott (Arkansas)
The Scales work adequately in our Wellness Program. We use them to measure height, weight giving us BMI. Scales arrived perfectly calibrated with no need to adjust them. The setup took about 30-40 minutes leisurely. They move fairly easy with the wheels attached on the base. They stay in a very confined area with little space waste. Overall could not do better for the price.

“Seca 700 Physician’s Balance Beam Scale with Height Rod”
By James Wamser
I always spend a lot of time researching products before I purchase them. When I got frustrated with the two digital scales we have, I started researching a better solution. Like most people, my frustration with (most) digital scales is each time I weigh myself, I get a different reading all with-in a 10 minute period.

So, after spending a lot of time doing research, my wife and I decided to purchase a Seca 700 Physician’s Balance Beam Scale with Height Rod. It was delivered in perfect condition and took about 10-15 minutes to unpack and set-up. The instructions are very clear and I had no problems.

The quality and accuracy are everything I was looking forward. The old saying you get what you pay for applies here. Yes, it’s more expensive than the digital scales we purchased at Target over the years, but we feel it’s money well spent.

“Great Scale”
By N. Anthony Werner (Sarasota, Florida USA)
After having had several types of scales ,which have over time proved to be inaccurate ,I decided to purchase a physician’s scale like my doctor’s. I am just finishing a 6 week HCG diet cure protocol where I need to weigh myself daily. This scale s very accurate and I am glad I made the investment.I also lost 20 Lbs. in 6 weeks.Seca 700 Physician’s Balance Beam Scale with Height Rod.

Electronic Scales – Spring Balance

Posted in Electronic Kitchen Scales on December 5th, 2010 by Andrew – Be the first to comment

Electronic Scales – Spring BalanceYou will need the spring balance MT4020 model to check the weight of the products you have bought in the store or on the market, or to weigh the ingredients for your favorite meals when you are cooking dinner in the kitchen, just wherever you need to know the exact weight of any goods. These scales made in the form of a common spring balance, show the weight in a digital form on a small screen. The accuracy of their measurements is 10 grams, which significantly exceeds the accuracy of mechanical scales. The maximum measured weight is 5 kg. The resolution of the scales is 10 grams. The device itself weighs only 42 grams. The device is powered by a battery type CR2032. It is very simple to use the scales. Insert the battery into the battery compartment. Briefly press the power button, the display will shower 0. Hang a load to the hook. When weighing is complete, a red LED will light up and the display will show the measured weight in kilograms. Our scales can also weigh a load of any packaging – bags, cans, buckets. Hang the bag to the scales and press the power button. The device will generate an automatic calibration and the display will show the digit 0. Put any load into the bag, and the display will show the net mass and the mass of the bag will be automatically deducted from the result. The scales are automatically switched off 60 seconds after the measurement. To prolong the battery life, we can turn off the scales manually. To make

torsion balance – 1 gram mechanical scale, part 1 of 2

torsion beam balance, part 1 of 2 parts. mechanical scale, non-electronic, maximum capacity 1 gram. aka: hairbeam balance. works perfectly, all six original hairs intact. see it working, in good clear closeups, in these two movies. good for weighing tiny stuff like diamonds, jewels, atoms, neutrons, postage stamps (without the envelope they’re attached to), lightweight powders in small portions, and similar stuff. also excellent decorative item, for mechano-nerds, and ‘steampunk’ persons. you can also feast your eyes upon it online here: I’ll sell this thing for cash, please make offer *or* I’ll *swap* it for items on my want list, which you can gaze at (bewildered) here: this thing has adequate factory provisions to ‘lock’ the moveable parts solid FOR shipping purposes, so I *am* willing to ship this, as well…
