There are other limitations. Do you need a large hard drive to digitize your vinyl collection, or to hold a load of digital video family? Forget it. You’ll receive only 40 to 80 GB memory. There’s no separate graphics card with the muscle to blast you into alien highest resolutions. And, although displays for these systems are often cheap tout a “flat panel” monitor, this is just a sneaky way of making a cathode-ray tube (picture tube) monitor sound like a slim LCD.

Given the constraints, we scaled back our expectations are to be expected to handle these machines. Of the four tested three 0 Windows-based computers. The fourth was from Apple Computer. Each comes with a drive that burns CDs and plays DVDs and plays (but does burn).

Never one to compete up to high tech’s bargain, but Apple recently introduced the 0 Mac mini, a petite machine about the size of a cigar box. The catch is that the mini without a monitor, keyboard, mouse or speakers is. What they lack, however, is horsepower. Random-access memory or RAM – a lubricant that helps a computer to run fast – is minimal. And the processor is a weaker cousin of Intel’s Pentium 4 have, so you’ll only be the bare minimum for Windows XP. If you run multiple programs simultaneously, can start speeds, significantly behind. And do not expect top-of-the-line word processing and spreadsheet software.

Cheap but good Panasonic stereo turntable

Posted in Cheap Digital Scale on October 21st, 2010 by Andrew – 18 Comments

Today’s .99 thrift store find: a Panasonic SG-X7 early ’90s stereo system with radio, turntable, and cassette. Just like my larger Panasonic stereo from 1994 that I featured in a previous video, this one is built with very cheap and lightweight plastic materials, but the quality of all the components is surprisingly good. I really like the styling on this one, too, including the “digital” tuner dial scale, the “concealed” turntable, and the cassette button-style function controls.

Your Checklist For Cheap Catalog Printing

Posted in Cheap Digital Scale on October 10th, 2010 by Andrew – Be the first to comment

If you want some cost effective strategies for catalog printing, then look no further. This little guide will give you the standard checklist for cheap catalog printing. Go through the list one by one and you should be able to save a considerable amount of money. Be warned though. Cheap catalog printing will require some effort on your part to maintain the quality of your catalogs while reducing the cost.

1.      Get rid of the writer – First, sad as it may sound, you may need to get rid of your catalog writer. Since most catalogs focus on images and short descriptions, a full time writer isn’t really cost effective for your catalogs. Writing for catalogs is simple enough, and you should be able to carry that work load, especially if you really want to save money in catalog printing.

2.      Ready your digital camera – Next, it might be time to get that new digital camera out for a spin. You may have been using professional photographers in the past, but with the advent of digital technology for capturing and editing images, you can do the job of a photographer as well with little training involved. Just read about the basic photographic techniques, and brush up on a little image enhancement protocols and you should be set. You can find all the information you want usually by just “googling” them. If you do this, you get another significant amount of savings in your catalog printing budget.

3.      Look for templates – Now, for the layout of your catalog, the best and cheapest way is to look for a template. A catalog template is easy enough to find over the Internet. Just browse through catalog printing sites, and design blogs and you should score a couple of free catalog templates that you can download. Since it is free, you don’t have to worry about the cost. Also, since it is a template, it will be easy to use. You just need to place in the text and images that you want.

4.      Ask colleagues for cheap printing options  – For extra advice on cheap catalog printing, never forget to ask some friends and colleagues about their experiences in catalogs. More often than not, some might recommend a few cheap options in terms of design and printing that you can utilize to further decrease the cost of your catalog task.
5.      Research on online printing services – To get the best deals for catalog printing, it is always good to search extensively online for the best online printing services. Exhaust all your options by comparing the printing services over the Internet, identifying the ones with the best deals. Online printing services typically offer competitive prices that can suit small budgets.

6.      Find cheap options on color printing – Now, be aware of your cheap options for color printing. Catalogs can actually be adjusted to have full color covers, while the inner pages are printed in black and white. If you really want to save money, you can choose this option as a good alternative. You can still use the full color cover to attract people, while you can save money on the black and white inner pages.

7.      Find cheap options on paper stock – Like the color printing options, you also have the opportunity to save money by adjusting your paper stock. Some catalogs can have high quality thick and glossy paper stock for their covers, while the inner pages can be just regular type paper. Again, this maximizes the outside impact of your catalogs, while you save money on the inner pages.

8.      Look for discount offers or bulk packages – If you plan on printing a lot of catalogs, do not forget to ask for a discount in your bulk orders. Most printers offer bulk order discounts since they also save money when they print a lot of things. Off-set printers in particular benefit from large scale orders. So always ask for a discount when possible.

9.      Consider your office printer – If you are still starved for money, and a professional catalog printer will not cut it, then you should consider your office printer for the job of cheap catalog printing. All the investment that you need here is the color ink and the paper and the rest is basically about your hard work in printing each page of the catalog one by one. If you are determined enough for cheap catalog printing, this is the way to go.10.     Cheap distribution techniques – Finally, as the last item for cheap catalog printing, you can save money for catalogs by looking at cost effective distribution techniques. Sending catalogs by direct mail marketing will cost you in terms of stamps and envelopes. To save money on this, you yourself or some dedicated staff can do a door to door in your local neighborhoods to distribute your full color catalogs. Barring that, you can leave your catalogs in public places like airports, train and bus stations and even in the local cafe’ or library. All of these techniques require only a little footwork, and you will be saving hundreds of dollars in postal or distribution costs. So that is the checklist for cheap booklet printing. Remember, cheap doesn’t necessarily mean bad. Go through this checklist and you should still be printing good quality catalogs at a reduced cost.
