Dishonest Weights & Scales: Are The Postal Services Ripping Us Off?

Posted in Uncategorized on March 3rd, 2011 by Andrew – 6 Comments

ATASCADERO, California — Confusion ensued when an organizer of SoCal Martial Law Alerts (SCMLA), Kim M., tried to determine the true weight of two First-Class letters to Congresswoman Lois Capps (D) California that had been returned due to “postage due.” Since each envelope had contained only six sheets of paper and since Kim M. had previously been able to mail envelopes containing 10 sheets of paper each without incurring “postage due” fees, she suspected that a weighing error had been made. Kim M. first went to Perry’s Parcel, an independent mail and shipping service in Atascadero, California, to purchase additional postage for the two envelopes, but when the clerk weighed the envelopes on their postal scale, it showed that each of the letters weighed only .60 ounces — well under the one-ounce limit for First Class postage. But when Kim M. took the letters to an United States Postal Service (USPS) office in Atascadero to dispute the “postage due,” their scale showed that the letters each weighed 1.1 ounces — a difference in weight of half an ounce from the scale at Perry’s Parcel. When questioned about the large difference in weight between the two scales, the postal clerk shrugged and said, “Ours are regulated. Theirs are regulated by them.” When the same Post Office’s automated postage machine showed that an envelope and six sheets of paper weighed 1.3 ounces — a difference of .70 ounces from the postage scale at Perry’s Parcel — Kim M. then went to several

Rely On Digital Scales When Accuracy Hangs In The Balance

Posted in Uncategorized on February 27th, 2011 by Andrew – Be the first to comment

A Digital scale or analytical balance can be employed across a broad spectrum of businesses ranging from research laboratories to heavy-duty industrial applications.  Uses for digital scales and balances go far beyond determining accurate weights –  whether in milligrams or tons.  Among other tasks they are used for counting, for recipe weighing, for tolerance weighing, totalizing, dispensing and percentage determination.

An analytical balance is perfect for tolerance weighing, for example, which allows users to set limits when performing repetitive functions such as filling a container with a specified weight of product.  When products being weighed fall within set tolerances, the scale signals an OK.  Otherwise the scale emits a visual or audio signal.  The signal makes it easier for the operator to quickly fill multiple containers.

A tremendous range of digital scales and analytical balances are available to satisfy most every conceivable need, as exemplified by the Kern family offered by Tovatech.  In accordance with GLP, GMP and various regulations most of these weighing and counting instruments are officially verified for accuracy before shipment.  Stringent rules also apply to ongoing calibration in accordance with ISO 9000 requirement.

But as accurate as a scale or balance may be when shipped, it is incumbent on users to operate and maintain these instruments to high standards in order to survive compliance audits that may be called by agencies such as the FDA. Even when health issues are not impacted, an inaccurate scale could mean that customers are not getting what they pay for, or the manufacturer is packaging more than the label indicates.

Scale Tips

It doesn’t take much to throw off a scale’s accuracy, especially when weighing in milligrams.  When placing product on the weighing pan personnel must allow time for the scale to stabilize.  Placing the product in the center of the weighing pan is also a good practice as incorrect readings may result otherwise from what is termed an eccentric or corner loading error. Stabilization time is shortened and weighing accuracy is improved when the scale weighing cell is formed of a single block of material such as used in the Kern ABT analytical balance.

Electrostatic discharge can also throw off measurements when weighing non-conductive materials.  A discharge ionizer is the remedy.

External vibrations or oscillations can also cause inaccurate readings.  These may be so slight as to go unnoticed by personnel but nonetheless can have an impact on the performance of a digital balance. Placing the scale or balance on a dampening pad may offer some protection.

Where the scale or balance is being used can help determine purchase specifications.  For example, scales used in factory settings may be subject to dirt and moisture.  In such instances the equipment should have an IP (ingress protection) rating against dust and moisture.  The latter is particularly important if the scale is used in a wet area or subject to frequent hose-downs to remove contaminants.   An IP rating is usually given as a two-digit number with the first (generally 0 to 6) relating to solid objects including dust and the second (generally 0 to 8) against liquids. The higher numbers the greater the protection.

Most critical to the accuracy of a digital balance, laboratory or industrial scale is periodic calibration with the frequency and process spelled out in the company’s operation manual.  This is a subject unto itself.

The Advantages and Different Types of Floor Scales

Posted in Uncategorized on February 24th, 2011 by Andrew – Be the first to comment

Any object has a volume and measures some weight. We use to weigh different objects for many purposes. Men weigh himself regularly as he watches his diet and makes sure that he is always healthy. It is also important to weigh passengers and make sure that a boat, plane or automobile is not overloaded. Otherwise it may cause fatal accidents if the transportation breaks down.

Accurate measurements are very important in our day to day activities. It is crucial to manufacturing and many other industrial companies. There are many devices used to measure weight and one of them is floor scales.

This is usually laid on the floor of the home or companies and industries. It is used mainly to weigh heavy objects. You will typically see it in hospitals to get the weight of patients. It is also seen in courier companies to get the weight of shipment. The shipping cost is often relative to the weight of the package.

The normal floor scales are the ones that have the flat and wide areas. It can handle tons of weights. This is usually made of the strongest stainless steel materials to prevent corrosion and be able to handle even heaviest items.

The manual types require some computation from the user. This means that the operator of the floor scale will have to adjust the indicator of the weight. There are also digital types. This is using dry cells as its power indicator. It is more accurate than the manual.

The floor scales also vary in sizes. The big industries use the large variety, while the while the smaller ones are enough for use at homes. The big industries use floor scales to measure their materials to be used in production. Others use the floor scales for weighing objects before shipping them to the destination. The popular small floor scale is the bathroom weighing scale. This is one portable. This is used at home to monitor the health of the family member. This determines if the family member is already overweight or gaining some pounds.

Floor scales are expensive. The prices depend on the sizes and the different features. Make sure to take care of this item properly because a defective scale will not give you an accurate measurement. A faulty measurement might affect the business or other important personal things one is watching out for.

Most companies offer free calibration. Make sure you calibrate regularly because accuracy is affected with continued use. Learn how to calibrate yourself. It is a fairly simple process.

The floor scale that you are buying should have at least one year warranty. Smaller types are usually free of charge when it comes to delivery. Some agents offer free services in cleaning also. Dirt could affect the accuracy of the scale so that it is important to keep the machine clean. The mechanism may also malfunction if dirt accumulates inside.

The other types of scales are the balance weigh scale, spring scale, Hydraulic or pneumatic scale, and digital weigh scales.

Balance weigh scale is the using of different weights in one end and putting the object to be weighed in the other end. They have sliders that use equilibrium in determining the weight. The spring scale weighs objects by the use of gravitational force. The object is hanged on a hook, and the gauge pulls on the reading.

Hydraulic or pneumatic scale uses hydraulic force in measuring the weight of an object. The digital scale is the most modern so far. This uses electronic circuitry to measure the weight. It is also the most accurate.
